Universal Music Group Sings Deal with Ethiopian Streaming Platform Sewasew

Universal Music Group (UMG) is setting foot in Ethiopia with what it describes as a “first-of-its-kind” licensing agreement with Ethiopian streaming platform Sewasew Multimedia.

According to the press release, Sewasew Multimedia will be responsible for the digital distribution and marketing of UMG’s extensive catalog of music in Ethiopia. This includes music from UMG’s globally recognized labels, such as Def Jam, Interscope Records, Island Records, Motown Records, Republic Records, and Virgin Records, as well as music from their African divisions, such as Def Jam Africa, Motown Gospel Africa, and Republic Records Africa.

Launched in October 2022, Sewasew is a music and entertainment company backed by RIDE’s Samrawit Fikru and has signed over 100 artists, including prominent figures in the Ethiopian music scene.

Betting on exclusive and niche content, Sewasew Multimedia, a streaming platform backed by Samrawit Fikru, is preparing to launch the podcast feature on its streaming app. Slated for release in two weeks, Sewasew will showcase a variety of exclusive podcasts spanning an array of diverse topics.

According to Behailu Tesfaun, Podcast Department Head at Sewasew Multimedia, the platform seeks to become a central hub for podcasts with an aim to democratize knowledge. Ethio Telecom, in partnership with Kulu Network, has launched Elff Plus, a music streaming service offering unlimited access to Ethiopian and African music and music videos.

Available on mobile web, iOS, and Android, songs on the platform can be downloaded for offline use, and the app comes in 4 languages (English, Amharic, Afaan Oroomo, and Tigrigna).
