Shega, JICA, MInT Launch In-Depth Research Publication on Addis Ababa’s Startup Ecosystem

Ethiopian media, data, and intelligence firm Shega in partnership with the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and Ministry of Innovation & Technology (MInT) has released the Addis Ababa Startup Ecosystem Report 2023, providing readers with a deep dive into the capitals’ startup landscape.

The research, which is the first of its kind in terms of depth and reach, surveyed over 300 startups in Addis Ababa, finding key insights into the state of funding, revenue, valuation and job creation of the startups.

“This report marks the first time that a study has been conducted solely on the startup ecosystem in Addis Ababa. Previously, numerous studies were dedicated to the Micro-, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs) sector. Safaricom, Sumitomo, JICA, MiNT Partner to Drive Ethiopia’s Digital Transformation

Ethiopia’s new telecom operator, Safaricom Ethiopia, global investment firm Sumitomo Corporation, and the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) have joined forces to assist Ethiopia in its digitization journey. The trio has solidified this intention by officially signing a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Ministry of Innovation & Technology (MiNT).

The Memorandum, signed today, July 19, 2023, aims to realize the Ethiopian government’s goals outlined in its National Digital Transformation Strategy, Digital Ethiopia 2025.

Through collaboration, these four entities aim to accelerate the development of innovative solutions by effectively utilizing digital technologies.

This strategic partnership will involve the establishment of working groups focusing on the five pillars of Ethiopia’s digital strategy: Infrastructure, Enabling Systems, Digital Interactions, Business Ecosystem, and lastly, Regulatory Framework, Job creation, and Capacity Building.…

JICA, MinT Announce Ethiopia Startup Innovation Pitch Event

The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Ministry of Innovation and Technology of Ethiopia (MinT) are inviting investors and companies from Japan and around the world to attend a pitch event, where 15 Ethiopian startups will showcase their best ideas in hopes of winning a cash prize of 500,000 birr and a business trip to Japan.

The event, scheduled for Wednesday, March 8th, 2023, aims to support outstanding startups that solve social problems and contribute significantly to economic growth and employment in Ethiopia.
