Kabba, Student-Centric Ride-Sharing Platform Unlocks Fresh Market in Addis Ababa

Three years ago, Blen Hailu, after a decade of working in the banking industry, transitioned to a new chapter in life by starting a family. Blen, who holds a Master’s Degree in Developmental Economics, was a mother of two at the time and was facing challenges in transporting her kids to and from school.

“The existing transportation service for students lacks quality and is unreliable, and unsafe. The drivers and attendants are not adequately trained and responsible for the well-being of the children,” states Blen.

According to Blen, parents face numerous issues, such as being unable to monitor their children’s trips. Some schools do have their own transportation service for kids. But parents have no choice in selecting the car or driver, as the service was assigned through the school, limiting their control over the transportation arrangements. Moreover, there was no guarantee of service continuity if the assigned car or driver encountered issues.

Zmall Launches On-Demand Laundry Service in Addis Ababa

Zmall Delivery, one of Ethiopia’s largest e-commerce and delivery platforms, is introducing an on-demand laundry service to provide users with a hassle-free doorstep pickup and delivery experience for their laundry needs.

Scheduled for launch on January 1, 2024, this laundry service is the latest addition to Zmall’s offerings, as it aspires to become a comprehensive digital marketplace. The on-demand laundry service will cater to all types of clothing, from t-shirts to bed sheets and comforters. Delivery personnel will pick up the items, transport them to the laundry service, and return them after washing.

The startup, which expanded its operations to South Sudan, has incorporated 12 vehicles into its fleet for this service and plans to add 18 more shortly.

“Users will be able to fill in information about the items to be washed on the app, including specific requirements if they have any,” Yoseph Hailu, Marketing Manager at Zmall, told Shega.

Daily Brief: Police Crack Down on “Illegal Sports Betting” Shops in Addis Ababa

Officials in Addis Ababa have taken action against 86 sports betting shops operating within the Addis Ketema District, claiming they were found engaging in illegal activities.

According to Addis Ababa Police, sports betting shops have been identified as potential hotspots for criminal activities, contributing to increasing crime rates.

Speaking to the Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation, Chief Inspector Paulos Demsey, the head of the community police service division within the district police department, stated that police took actions against these establishments where violent incidents have been reported.

According to Paulos, the affected betting shops were found to be operating outside the district where their licenses were issued and engaging in the sector without the required business licenses. Paulos added that actions against shops involved in unlawful activities would continue.

Report Finds Renewable Energy to Be the Least Popular Sector for Startups in Addis Ababa

A recent study that sheds light on the startup landscape in Addis Ababa has found that the renewable energy sector is the least popular area for startups in the capital.

The study conducted by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Ministry of Innovation & Technology (MInT) in collaboration with Shega surveyed over 300 startups, found only 10 startups currently engaged in the renewable energy sector, making it a significantly underrepresented field.

The green energy sector is closely trailed by on-demand services, with only 17 startups operating within this field.

The report, titled Addis Ababa Startup Ecosystem Report 2023 attributes the limited presence of startups in renewable energy to the absence of supportive policies and regulations that encourage the growth of such businesses.

Tolo, a new ride-hailing platform that enables users to conveniently request motorcycle rides through their mobile devices, has recently launched its services in Addis Ababa. Taking inspiration from Asian decacorns like Gojek and Grab, Tolo aims to provide an affordable means of commuting within Addis Ababa.

Addis Ababa Implements Mandatory Digital IDs for Motorcycles

In an effort to enhance the monitoring and regulation of motorcycles, the Addis Ababa Traffic Management Agency is enforcing mandatory digital IDs for all motorcycles operating in the city.

AU Summit Triggers Motorcycle Ban in Addis Ababa, Disrupting Delivery Businesses

The city of Addis Ababa has temporarily prohibited the use of motorcycles due to the upcoming 36th African Union summit, affecting delivery businesses.

The ban, which took effect on February 8, 2023, covers all types of motorcycles and Bajajs (three-wheeled vehicles), except for those used by security and traffic bodies.

New Radio Station Backed by Samrawit Fikru Launches in Addis Ababa

Tirita FM, a private radio station that has Samrawit Fikru, founder and CEO of RIDE, among its shareholders has officially commenced regular broadcast.

The station, which was built at a cost of 50 million birr, can be heard on FM 97.6 and serves the residents of Addis Ababa.

Tirita was one of the three private radio stations that received a license from the then-Ethiopian Broadcast Authority in mid-2020.

After two years of setting up its offices, importing broadcasting equipment, and hiring staff, the station began pilot testing its programs in June 2022.
