Government Sets New Income Tax Threshold at 2,000 Birr, Rejecting Unions’ Proposal for Higher Exemption
The House of People’s Representatives has approved a revised salary income tax proclamation, establishing a new tax-exempt threshold of 2,000 birr. This decision comes despite persistent lobbying from the Confederation of Ethiopian Trade Unions, which had urged the government to raise the exemption level to 8,324 birr.
During its 4th year, 2nd extraordinary session held today, Parliament passed the proclamation with a majority vote. Five members opposed the bill, while twelve abstained.
According to the amended law reviewed by Addis Standard, the tax-free salary threshold has been increased from 600 birr to 2,000 birr.
